Šumiac

Šumiac is a picturesque village which is located in the Low Tatras. It offers many cultural activities and traditions.





Sights:

One of the most important monuments is the folk house and surrounding area. It consists of a total 3 buildings, which are also cultural monuments, named: folk house, woodshed and economic construction. In the past, there were held various events, today these buildings serve as historical monuments.



Museum of bells in Šumiac
Private collection of Nicholas Gigac. Nicholas began collecting bells, thanks to his grandfather who gave him six bells on his birthday and it was love for the first sight so  at present there are about 2000. People from Šumiac are very proud of this collection. There you can find bells from all over the world.


Episcopal church
The first pastor was Andrew Bukovecký. Šumiac temple was built in 1775, as the original wooden church burned build a new, brick. What is interesting, the temple had three onion-shaped towers, which disappeared from Horehronie architecture as the time has passed.


Theater
The theater is located on the square and it is open to anyone.



Events
Events in Šumiac are really colorful. First, the murmur of Šumiac This is a festival which brings different forms of art, we are less familiar with but also those that everyone knows.
Fašiangy in Šumiac. Fašianfy is the feast that offers a lot of fun and joy. In Slovakia, this custom celebrated less than formerly, but still there are villages where people love and remind that custom.
Christmas - Kračun under Kralova hola. This year is the 15th year of wonderful festival celebration which takes place in the church in Šumiac. Every year after Christmas, people gather in church and you can enjoy many representatives of folk music.


Folk Traditions
Folk traditions in Sumiac are very diverse but such traditions are devoted relatively longer just the elderly. Ms Maria Ševčáková embroidered handmade Christmas decorations that will delight everyone's heart. Is dedicated to this beautiful craft since-scientific times.



                                                                                                
People are devoted to making utilitarian items such as carpet weaving - rugs, commercial embroidery. This activity is dedicated about 30 people. Horehronie are characteristic for craft-oriented wood products, functional as well as artistic.




Šumiac personalities

Juraj Kriváň
Was a Slovak sportsman and a teacher. He was the organizer of parachute sport recorder jump on target in free fall and in a group jump and jump world champion in the 600 m to the accuracy landing. Throughout his life he worked as a teacher but also as a parachuting instructor.



Michal Petro:




Was an anti-fascist fighters officer and a participant of the Slovak National Uprising. He studied medical school but unfortunately he did not finish it  and became an anti-fascist fighters. He was awarded the Cross of Valour war. He was later arrested by German police and he was taken to Germany, where he died.

František Kreutz:



Writer for children and youth also acclaimed novelist.He studied at a teacher later it happened. During his lifetime, he wrote that rumors published in children's magazines. He was the author of numerous books for young people and adults. He dedicated himself also Vlastivědný and literary research and museums.

Telgárt

Telgárt was risen at the first half at the 14. Century. The first written mention about the village Telgárt was found in 1326.

The famous citizens of Telgárt:
-          Anastázia Miertušová – a Slovak painter
-          Ivan Andrijovič Stavrovský – a greekcatholic priest, teacher
-          Michal Spišiak – a writer
-          Pavol Spišiak – a greekcatholic priest, poet
-          Ján Ambróz – a folk singer

There are folk groups, which are focused at traditional culture:
-          Folk group Telgárt ( created in 1957 )
-          Kids folk group Telgártčok ( created in 1981 )
-          Folk band Harvanovci

Every year you can visit there the following events:
  -    Horehronská valaška – the competition where you can see kid´s musical folklore. This year it will be   it´s 55th year.
-  Blueberry day  - celebrated in August - it´s a competition in baking of blueberry pie accompanied with traditional folk performances

Nature:
The beauty of close nature is unique, because there are for example three national parks:
-          Nízkotatranský National Park
-          Muránska planina
-          Slovenský raj
Telgárt offers touristic the path to Kráľova hoľa.


Kráľova hoľa:   is known from many legends. The biggest rivers of Slovakia starts here : Čierny Váh, Hnilec, Hornád and Hron . Since 1960 there is television and radio transmitter called "Kráľova hoľa "


Šumiac:
Not far from here is a village called Šumiac. One of the most known citizien is Mikuláš Gigac who started, as the first from Slovakia, playing on bells. There are more than 2000 pieces of them in his private collection. Some of them are oldest then 300 years.  

Sport:
Ski Resort Telgárt -  if there is enough snow you can use 7 trailers including 20m long caild trailer.   There are 2 types of slopes: 1. Stodolisko-(beginners and slightly advanced
2. Tresník-(middle advanced and advanced)
Sights:
-          Catolic  church near memorable graveyard of soldiers and partisans
-          Monument of Ján Šverma, who was the hero of Slovak National Uprising (he tragiclly died in battle)
-          Chmarošský viadukt – it is a railway made of bricks with in 30 years of 20th century. Its lenght is 113,6m and height is 18m.



Accommodation and food:
-          Horehronská kúria – offersa  place for famillies with children and tourists
                                  -capacity is 22 people
           I recomend it because it smells like weed, there is nice serving stuff and home atmosphere.

-          Penzion u Hanky – is 500m from Ski resort Telgárt.

Čierný Balog



Čierny Balog
Is a municipality in Brezno district, in the Banska Bystrica region of central Slovakia. The municipality has around 5140 inhabitants and in land register it  takes an area of 14 718 ha.

Čierny Balog is really picturesque village with amazing nature, it´s surrounded by beautiful mountains in heart of Slovakia. There are a lot of forests, huge fields and beautiful hills. You can feel here like in fairy tale not only in summer but also in winter.
The village has rich cultural life. Residents like to take part in various cultural events in this village. The most popular  is The National Day of the Tree, so called Tree Day, organized annually in July. Every year, thousands of visitors from different corners of Slovakia come there to enjoy performances of many popular modern and folk groups, to see and try some folk crafts. Children can make a trip in a nearby forest and learn many useful things connected with nature.You can buy souvenirs there, meet new people, taste traditional meals like roasted home-made sausages, grilled pork meat and ”halušky” with sheep cheese, drink slovak wine, “slivovica”( plum brandy) and beer. All these things create great and really amazing atmosphere.denstromu_2009_01.jpg  
Also we have some sport events like football and hockey matches, competition of volunteer fire brigades, different village parties, folklore events  connected  with some national holidays (e.g. Christmas, Easter). Also in our village we have some sport clubs like football clubs TJ Tatran, ŠK Partizán, Hockey club, Biathlon Club, and tourist division that gives young people the chance to practice sports.
Really, in our village we have a lot of interesting places you should  visit.
There are some types for you :
Our famous Čierný Hron railway.
This old scenic forest railway is one of  the major tourist attractions of the Horehronie Region. In the past, the regular wood transport on the railway started between Čierny Balog and Hronec. The main role of that railway was to transport wood from forests. When the railway was closed  it has started to work as a famous tourist attraction especially in summer period. You can take an unforgettable tour around some Slovakian villages in beautiful nature and for those who like an adventure you can experience the real robbery performance which is quite exciting. So keep your eyes open :)
